ORSUS - Explore iCal Notes(5).

Description

ORSUS is an iCal Notes(5) explorer. Given a link to an iCalendar calendar, ORSUS extracts the VJOURNAL components to a readable journal that can be shared or subscribed to. It supports HTML and RSS formats.

Usage

To render your existing iCalendar journal notes. Find the subscription link and copy it and enter in the ORSUS Redirection Portal.

If there is a VJOURNAL component with the summary "about", it will be rendered as the about information on the page rather than as a note.

Limitations

ORSUS can render iCalendars that are no larger than 50 Megabytes.

iCal Notes - Notes stored in a caldav server

Description

The iCal media type allows users to store and exchange calendaring information. Most commonly events and to-dos, but also journaling information, which is what is defined here as iCal notes. has support for VJOURNAL files, which can be used to keep a diary or to store miscellanous notes.

Motivation

There are a few reasons you would want to store your notes on a caldav server:

  • Interoperable. You can levarage apps such as Agendafs or jtx board to edit and view your notes across multiple devices.
  • Retrievable. iCal notes can be linked and categorized.
  • Own your data. Levaraging your existing email provider or Nextcloud host, iCal Notes allow you to store your notes without needing to sign up to any new provider and takes the burden of off the user to host the notes themselves.
  • Collaborative. Along with note linking, iCal notes have access rights, allowing you to collaboratively work on notes.

    Journal vs Notes

    A VJOURNAL component which has a dtstart set is considered a journal entry in Orsus. Vice-versa, a VJOURNAL component without a dtstart is considered a note.
